1. My idea of a ‘bridge’ is in the context of establishing a healthy and comfortable interfaith relationship. An imaginary structure that span the chasm of belief and convictions. A sacred passage for a peaceful and mutual co-existence among Muslims and Christians. A sincere bond among friends.
2. The foundation of this interfaith ‘bridge’ is a mixture of trust and faith between each other. It is a process that share togetherness and similarities for the common good of all. A join determination to unite rather than divide.
3. This interfaith ‘bridge’ is further strengthened by various elements. Foremost is the element of understanding. Relationships cannot be build on ignorance and misunderstandings. Lack of knowledge and understanding of each other will beget fear, confusion, intolerance and conflicts. The teachings of either faith could be manipulated and distorted by wicked souls to sow discontent in the hearts of the ignorance. The prevailing spates of Islamophobia is a living proof of how dangerous and vulnerable lack of knowledge can be.
4. Muslims and Christians need to get together and know each other more closely. They need to acquire the right knowledge from each other and understand why their counterpart believed what they believe in. They need to connect different hearts and mind that can agree to disagree and willing to understand every misunderstanding without compromising their respective faith. Discussions, dialogue and discourses are ideal forum to foster understanding, familiarity and respect.
5. Theology is the study about God. Both Islam and Christianity believe in the pre-existence of a divine being who is the creator and master of everything and everyone. Exploring together the fundamental concept and nature of God as well as the relationship with God in the respective faith would be a valuable ‘bridge’ building lesson crossing the great theological divide. Much can be learned about God from each other. Much more can be resolved when they understand and reasoned together. And the best ‘bridge’ is the ‘bridge’ that reaches God by reaching for one another.
